Thermi forms the southeast suburb of Thessaloniki. With the exception of its densely built up center, the wider district is a new built residential area with a grid plan, wide streets and mostly unformed public spaces. Most of the buildings are rather indifferent, a fact that, combined with the absence of landmarks of any kind, gives neutrality to the area.
The brief included a housing complex of one duplex and eight apartments with parking and individual garden spaces. The main aims were the sustainability and the ideal relationship between quality and construction cost. The complex consists of three blocks, one duplex and two blocks of four apartments each, with the main facades located alongside the road. The entrance and stairwell of each block were designed to the rear part so that the main facades of the buildings remain free for the layout of the living spaces and the creation of large openings and terraces. Design was based on a geometric approach of combining volumes which create a play of shadow and light and it also incorporated eco-friendly building materials and energy saving systems. |
