Thermi forms the southeast suburb of Thessaloniki. With the exception of its densely built up center, the wider district is a new built residential area with a grid plan, wide streets and mostly unformed public spaces. Most of the buildings are rather indifferent, a fact that, combined with the absence of landmarks of any kind, gives neutrality to the area.
The brief included a housing complex of eight residences with parking and individual garden spaces. The main aims were the sustainability and the ideal relationship between quality and construction cost. The complex consists of two blocks of 4 apartments, located to the south - east part of the plot. The entrance and stairwell of each block were designed to the rear part so that the main – oriented to the sea view – facades of the buildings remain free for the layout of the living spaces and the creation of large openings and terraces. Emphasis was given on the gradual transition from interior to exterior areas through the creation of semi-open spaces and shelters. Design incorporated eco-friendly building materials and energy saving systems. |
